Default Switching between console and X crashes computer

Hello all,

Recently installed a fresh copy of Debian Linux 3.1 over the old one on this computer as was having problems with Windows before - switching between console and X worked fine. But now when X starts, and I switch back to the console (i.e. Alt+Crtl+F1) I get a black screen and the computer completely locks up and requires holding down the power button for more than 4 seconds. I'm using a Dell Dimension 4300 with what I think is a Geforce 2 - (lspci shows: 0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400] (rev b2)). Only difference here I can see is that I'm using the 6111 driver where I was using the 5336 driver with the old install. How to fix this please? This problem means I can't shut down my computer as when X gets shut down, it switches back to the console and then I get a total crash.

Thanks very much for your help in advance

Cheers - Piers
