HL2 Preload file question

OK, I finally got through and was able to download the HL2 preload file.

Now, some silly questions:

I was never asked what directory to download the file into. I have looked, but can't find the file.

Where is the default location of the file?
Is it hidden?
What is the name of the file?

C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps is the default dir.

If you have pre-loaded both files you should have "base source shared materials.gcf" and "base source shared sounds.gcf" (The new one in pre-load phase two )
The two files are ~2 gigs.

I also have a file called "platform.gcf" in the SteamApps folder, dunno if thats part of HL2 though, don't think so.
