(smacks self upside head)

makes sense that it's easier to look at the driver and fix the driver than to find and fix the kernel patch, which probably does things 'right' anyways. pardon my thinko.

(screws head back on straight)

Thank you, zander and zenwhen!

Additional solution, from the mail bag this time:

This one of course breaks nvidia's binary driver; so nvidia users should do a
"patch -Rp1" to revert it.

usr/src/nv/nv.c needs this line defined at the top, apparently because the kernel no longer exports it from arch/i386/mm/init.c:

unsigned int __VMALLOC_RESERVE = 128 << 20;

This seemed satisfactory to them, YMMV as always.

@kirkengaard: __VMALLOC_RESERVE was a #define before, recent -bk snapshots change it to an unexported integer symbol; the preliminary workaround you suggested should work for the moment, but is fragile longer term. Another approach would be to export the symbol with EXPORT_SYMBOL(). This problem, as well as the others, will be addressed in a future NVIDIA driver release.

Thank you for adding the caveat. I had grasped that; not everyone will. The fix I reported above is what I could find sifting through linux-kernel, and I understand that nVidia will fix it their own way, after the edge stabilizes. I await that release with patience, while trying to fix what exists so that I can use it now. So far, and YMMV, vanilla 2.6.9-rc2 works with vanilla 1.0-6111, and there be dragons after that.
