Unhappy Performance problem on NVIDIA drivers

It seems that NVIDIA has introduced a bug in drivers later then 1.0.4496. This bug dramatically affects performance on pixel operations. I've seen other postings describing the problem, but no comment or fix seems to come from the NVIDIA people. We really depend on this OpenGL functionality and would really like to see this fixed. The problem can easily be reproduced. If you do glDrawPixels (256, 256, GL_RGB, GL_UNSIGNED_BYTE, pixels)
you can expect frame rates of 150+ FPS. Setting up a glPixelMap () and enabling
glPixelTransfer (GL_MAP_COLOR, GL_TRUE), the FPS drops to less than 1 FPS. The same thing happens if you use glColorTable () instead of glPixelMap (). This used to work fine with no measureable performance drops on drivers up to and including 1.0.4496.
My system is Fedora Core 1 with NVIDIA GeForce 420 Go, XFree86 4.3.0 and the latest NVIDIA driver, but the problem has been observed on other systems as well.

I was having very bad performance in all other 3D-games, except UT2004 with the latest 6111-drivers. Installing 6106 back helped me. If it ain't broken, don't fix it.

This one is killing me, too. I've had to implement a workaround that is only like 5x slower (doing my own mapping to RGBA pixels) instead of the 100x slower using GL_MAP_COLOR. I don't want to have to do this. I'm using build 5328, and I don't remember seeing the problem with 4496, but I believe you when you say that it worked OK then. Since I didn't trace it down to a particular build, I chalked it up to being a generic problem, so I implemented a workaround. When it doesn't work, you know it!!!
