xvmc + hd video

Hi, I'm new here ....

Have nvidia fx5700, 6111 version driver
Mandrake 10, kernel 2.6.7
P4 3ghz machine

With xvmc enabled in KaxTv and playing 1080i HD stream, I get a lot of de-interlacing-like artifacts. Is this a known problem? Does anyone know of a solution or possible solutions?

Is it likely to be a driver issue or a xvmc implementation issue?

Did you try using xv instead of xvmc to see if the artifacts are still there? That would narrow the problem down.

Xv is perfect. It also allows use of the de-interlacing options within KaxTv. With xvmc all these other options in KaxTv are unavailable. Why do I bother trying to get it to work you ask !!! It's a challenge.

The other thing is xvmc gives about a 30% reduction in cpu load over xv. If the quality of the picture could be improved it would be a great solution.

Do you get a good picture with xvmc?

I have two problems with xvmc. On my local WB (1080i) station, it really doesn't work. Anything that's not moving in the image will have ugly vertical lines. It's completely unwatchable, so I use xv for that.

I also have problems with 720p. It can be jumpy and sometimes it gets confused and displays an old frame (something from a second ago). It's distracting enough to use xv for that too.

But for all the other 1080i sources, it works perfectly. The hardware deinterlacing works very well and my CPU is never overworked.

Is this a personal cinema 5700? I just bought one and can't get better than 640x480 on the component output, can you post your XF86Config if your setup is similar?

No, not a personal cinema fx5700.

I did get one of the local 1080i channels broadcast locally displaying perfect with xvmc after trying some different configurations in XF86Config. I'll post the file in case anyone else wants to try:

To be honest, I don't think the 'overlay' settings do anything. Trying to get the driver to use Agpgart seemed to be of most help. I haven't tried displaying via tv out so these are the monitor settings (which I haven't changed):

I'm using the 6111 driver with MythTv (on KnoppMyth). My output device is a Pioneer RPTV with VGA input. It is locked to 1080i resolution, so everything I send to it must be at that rate.

XvMC produces pretty disappointing output on my system. The "jaggies" on the image are deplorable, and this is with 1080i source material from a pcHDTV card. It looks as though the vertical resolution is being changed to 540 or worse. The 720p streams are unwatchable with XvMC. I think it has something to do with the player wrongly assuming the streams are at 30fps instead of 60fps. (I enabled verbose messages in the myth playback module to discover that.)

The xv output looks fine at 1080i, but can't keep up with the frame rate on my system. THe xv output at 720p looks jaggy also, but at least it doesn't stutter and jerk like the XvMC output does.

I don't know if my problems are with nVidia's XvMC or myth. If anyone has ideas how I might monitor this problem and find a solution I'm all ears. If ATI is the only option, I will reluctantly abandon my built-in GeForce 440 MX video, but that is my last resort.
