I'm just wondering when nVIDIA will start to build their drivers against a version of X that isn't like 200 million years old. I think I wasn't even born when XFree86 4.0.2 was recent!

There's no real point in building it for a more modern version of X. The difference between 4.0.2 and the current version are not that huge. Most code inside X wasn't even changed during the years. The main things that were added were some bugfixes and then some new extensions. In case of the drivers it is just binary compatible with current X.
