Default NVIDIA Video Driver doesn't install: geforce 4 mx 440 SE 64 MB

I'm having problems installing the nVIDIA video Driver. When I'm running the installer I got this message:

unable to load the kernel module "nvidia.ko". this is most likely because the kernel module was built using the wrong kernel source files. please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your kernel; on red hat linux systems, for example, be sure you have the "kernel-source" rpm installed. if you know the correct kernel source files are installed, you may scpecify the kernel source path with the "--kernel-source-path" commandline option.

I have the correctly kernel-source installed and I also tryed to use this --kernel-source-path with no success.

The linux distro is Mandrake Linux 10 Official
and the video card is an XFX geforce 4 mx 440 SE 64 MB

I tryed the same procedure in another machine with a different video card (Pixel View Geforce 4 MX420 64MB), with the same linux distribution and the same kernel source and the driver installed succesfully.

What should I have to do?

Thanks for the help!

This is not a Video Card problem. What it's basically telling you is that the Kernel Source that you have installed does not match the kernel version you are booted into (The running Kernel). You need to update the kernel source to match your running kernel version.

But the kernel source is the same that the running compiled kernel.

I had exactly the same error under Mandrake 10 using kernel 2.6.8. With older kernels (like 2.6.3) it compiles and installs just fine. And I DID have the right kernel sources installed, no doubt of that.

There's a bug in the 1.0-6111 driver that hinders installation on some Mandrake 10 kernels; one workaround is to run the .run installer with the --add-this-kernel command line option before attempting the actual installation.

--add-this-kernel did not help with 2.6.8 on Mandrake, it helps to the compile error (as it says "make mkproper"), not to this "invalid module format"-error.

I have a mandrake 10 2.6.3-16mdkenterprise kernel and if I try and build it by hand, I get this error:

NVIDIA: calling KBUILD...
make[3]: *** No rule to make target `modules'. Stop.
NVIDIA: left KBUILD.
nvidia.ko failed to build!
make[2]: *** [module] Error 1
make[1]: *** [install] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1/usr/src/nv'
make: *** [kernel_module_install] Error 2
[ morbid : NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1 ]$

If I try the: sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run --add-this-kernel

I get the following error:

ERROR: Unable to build the NVIDIA kernel module interface.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve
