For those that haven't noticed yet, id has released the client, server and a demo of DooM3 for Linux systems. Go to http://zerowing.idsoftware.com/linux/doom/

hmm.. MP shows no servers. I've entered my CD key, & after several reboots I still get nothing. Anybody else try the MP?

Installed and ran without problems on my laptop using Suse 8.2.
Laptop: 2.2ghz 512mb NVidia GF4 4200go Driver for Linux is 61.11 Demo1 1280x800 Med 14.6FPS Demo1 960x700 Med 19.9FPS Demo1 800x600 Med 23.9FPS Driver for WinXP is 65.73 Demo1 1280x800 Med 14.8 Demo1 960x700 Med 20.5 Demo1 800x600 Med 26.1 For widescreen I'm using: seta r_customHeight "700" seta r_customWidth "960" seta r_aspectRatio "2" seta r_mode "-1" seta r_fullscreen "1" I'm getting a sound problem in some cut scenes, sort of clipped echo like a guitar delay pedel.

I compared Win98 and Linux perfomance on the same machine: Athlon XP 1.4GHz, 640mb RAM, VIA KT133A, GF 6800.
I used the same DoomConfig.cfg (in fact, Doom3 run from the same directory in both OSes): High settings, 1280x1024, 8xAF, no AA, all effects except double vision are on. One difference is the game version: I didn't bother to download 1.1 patch for Windows, while Linux client is already 1.1-ready. Also, Linux had a whole bunch of desktopish programs running ![]() Linux (61.11): timedemo demo1 precache 28.9 fps timedemo shot_demo002 37 max fps Win98 (61.21): timedemo demo1 precache 30.1 fps timedemo shot_demo002 36 max fps So perfomance is quite on a par, though CPU is the real limiting factor here, not video card/3D part. BTW, if you wish to run timedemo shot_demo001 and shot_demo002, be warned that there's no way to exit these timedemos, hitting ESC doesn't work in Linux version for some reason (in Windows version it stops timedemo immediately). You'll have to switch to console and killall -1 doom.x86, though you'll end with missing mouse cursor in X. If you run doom3 again and quit, cursor will be back. Another observation: antialiasing setting in Doom3 (r_multiSamples) doesn't have any apparent effect either on visuals or on perfomance. I didn't try to force AA from nvidia_settings yet... dante_uk: I have no sound issues here, with SB Live! Value. Last edited by kmike; 10-05-04 at 06:07 AM. |
