Default Re: FarCry 1.3 - OpenEXR HDR, 3dc, SM3.0 by default, more!

why would hdr and stuff need to be patched after the game release? couldn't it have been built into the engine already or are they modifying their engine atm to be able to produce them?

Engines take a long time to develop when you're building one from the ground up. It's not just graphics, but sound, physics, AI and so forth. Then you have to actually create the game around the engine, which considering the complexity of Far Cry, was no small task. As we all know, the hardware that is even capable of utilizing HDR (at a reasonable speed anyway) is less than a year old and wasn't even available in quantity when the game was released. There probably was some such capability built into the engine, but there has to be work done to exploit it on modern hardware.
