what's the worse performer - DX9 that's been forced onto the 5950 Ultra, or DX8.1 forced onto the game?
No, you don't need to change your DX version. HL2 just detects your NV3x card and defaults the config to the DX8.1 path.

I play with the rig in my sig. at 1024x768 noAA/AF with all options set to high and it's vey fluid. I've even tried swapping my card with a GeForce4 Ti4400 and the game is very enjoyable as well.

Some slowdowns occours when Havok is moving a lot of stuff (ie debris when crates explode), but this is probably due to the processor.

One thing I noticed is that THIS RAME SUCKS A LOT OF RAM! Even with 768Mb the swapping is close to be intolerable. I'd rather play at 20 fps rather than having the game pausing and freezing every once in a while.

I still haven't investigated PS 1.1 vs 1.4 vs 2.0 difference. Is the difference noticeable ?

I played Half Life 2 with forced DirectX 9, the performance and graphics are much better at 1024x768 8xAF and all options maxed on my Athlon XP 1800+ with 5900 Ultra. I checked Fraps for fps, it ran very smooth at 45 - 80 fps, when there are some to heavy actions it drop to smooth 27 - 35 fps with Forceware 67.02 driver.

If you looking for upgrade from 5900 Ultra or 5950 Ultra, it not necessary to do that cos it doing much better on DirectX 9 than I thought. I will leave the upgrade until next year, probably to NV50 rather than get NV48 for Half Life 2.

I think that you shouldn't upgrade that 59xx card, because it's a damn fast card, and it could run HL2 in DX9 mode well, but not as fast as an ATI 9800. And it screams in other games...so just stick with what you got

How are you forcing DX9?

I'm getting ready to put HL2 on my son's computer (5900 Ultra) and I'd like to compare 8.1 to 9.0

Tks
