Unhappy debian/chromium / segmentation fault

first: yes, i googled like hell before..
second: yes I also searched this forums...

but i couldn't find the right answers/solutions.

whats the problem:

I cannot run chromium bsu,
and maybe other 3d-games (maybe at least sdl-based apps) too.

some informations:
amd athlon barton 2800+ on msi kt400
debian sarge
kernel 2.6.9-1-k7
xfree86 4.3.0
kde 3.2.3
NVIDIA GeForce fx 5700 ultra

and the error message:
bla@blabla:~$ chromium -w
SDL initialized.
video mode set (bpp=16 RGB=565 depth=24)

Fatal signal: Segmentation Fault (SDL Parachute Deployed)

a chromium window openes, but it stays blank..
starting in fullscreen ends up in a full blank screen.. and restart of x is necessary..

I guess it is a problem related to the nvidia driver..
as i googled it looked like the only people who have this problem also have nvida-cards and nvidia-driver

i'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with your nvidia driver, since i experienced the same problem with my ati card.

The reason to this is probably due to the fact that nvidia is about the only usuable card for 3d in linux

It might be worth checking to see what the version of SDL is on your system. (rpm -qa | grep SDL) The latest version is SDL-1.2.7-1. I had similar problems with some 3D games, and installing the latest SDL package solved that problem.
