Default FX 5500 OpenGL freeze

I've been trying for 9 days to get my card working, UT2004 works perfectly well no matter how many times I close it and launch it again, the problem is with glxgears and all SDL based programs.
When I run glxgears it works okay for about 10 seconds and then nosedives to about 1 FPS and I can't do anything else with the system, the mouse is ok but I can't close any windows or switch desktops so I have to reboot.
Same thing happens with SDL based programs, they run fine for about 10 seconds and then the textures starts tearing up and then the FPS crawls down to about 1, and the system hangs.
I have tried vanilla kernel 2.6.7 and tried gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.9-r3, I even tried 2.4.26-r12 still the same problem.
I also tried the 6111 and the 6629 drivers, with or without NvAGP, AGPgart and NoAGP.
I also removed Frame Buffer from all the kernels.
I tried with `LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.3.98` but that didn't make any difference.
I also ran some SDL code that I wrote under valgrind, but since the machine freezes (if I may say), I viewed the log after a reboot and there was nothing serious.
The only thing I didn't play with is Xorg which is 6.8.0-r3.

here is my Xorg conf and here is my kernel config for 2.6.9-r3.
btw, I have an Nvidia FX 5500 with 256RAM, and I tried changing the aperture size in the BIOS from 256 to 64 but that didn't work also.
