Default Slipstreaming WinXP w/ sp2 & Sata Raid

For those that are interested in making a bootable WinXP w/sp2 and sata raid, here are a couple of links.

I've personally made 4 cd-r and 1 dvd-r bootable Winxp w/SP2 & sata raid and Promise Raid. If you still want to control how windows loads, do not make a WinNT.sif file (unattended file). It will automatically load everything for you which isn't a bad thing, but I prefer some control over apps.

Credit for the last five links goes to nOBeLium over at www.msfn.org. They are very helpful.

Making a bootable disk is easy. Just use Nero 5.5 or above. If you have multiple machines with different raid controllers, just follow the instructions for slipstreaming winxp w sata raid and the following:

1. unzip your raid drivers in folders other than the one you will be burning.

2. create a directory called XP-CD. next, copy your Winxp cd to it. Inside you will see several folders including the I386 folder. Just add another folder and call it TEXTMODE. Copy all of your sata drivers, promise drivers, ect to it. Make sure you don't copy over the txtsetup.oem files!!. Copy only one of them to the Textmode folder and open it up. Next, open up the other txtsetup.oem files and highlight and copy the contents to the other txtsetup.oem file within the TEXTMODE folder. They will merge!

3. You will have to modify the txtsetup.sif file within the I386 folder to reflect the number of raid controllers. Just follow the links provided above. If you have a promise fasttrak raid controller such as MBFasttrak133 lite, you will also have to modify the DOSNET.sif file within the i386 folder. I've found all of the info for modifying the dosnet.sif and txtsetup.sif files provided by the listed links above.

I took me 5 coasters to get it right. A small typo can be a real killer......

Cheers

Cool Re: Slipstreaming WinXP w/ sp2 & Sata Raid

Thank you for the info/links. I've wanted to make one for a while but I've always been too lazy to do the necessary research.

I thought it was kind of interesting that there hasn't been a sticky on this subject. I know of several other sites that do. Hopefully, everyone will enjoy the links. I will look for others.

Cheers

Slipstreaming has been possible since NT (even Windows 3.0 actually) IIRC so I suppose that's why we've not had a sticky here on that topic. But yes, it is a huge time saver and it just flat out works. It's not difficult to do either.

This is an excellent link regarding recording instructions specific to Nero:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase...tream.asp#nero

If you want to tweak the unattended settings then run "\Setup Manager\setupmgr.exe" to create your own winnt.sif file. The winnt.sif file must be saved into the \I386 folder.

More info on the winnt.sif file can be found here:
http://unattended.msfn.org/xp/reference.htm

Here is another excellent overall guide:

Clay,

I've done the unattended cd w/winnt.sif and it works great. However, I don't use it that often. I still prefer some contol on installing windows. I've made a post on another site explaing "multiple raid" driver installs while installing winxp. You have to merge all of the txtsetup.oem files together. It works. Also, you have to edit the dosnet.sif file to include all of the different ide raid controllers. I did this because I have more than one computer w/different raid controllers.

So, I made a non-unattended bootable cd for both machines. Yesterday, I made a non-unattended bootable DVD. It works great! However, not on the other computer. No dvd drive support for it....

Anyway, I might make a generic "raid driver" package that includes a dosnet.sif, winnt.sif, txtsetup.sif, and txtsetup.oem (merged *.oem) for those that are interested. It will take a little time.

Cheers

Phalinx,

True, once you toss RAID into the mix then some manual control is usually better.

Also, a bit off topic, but DVDs are a godsend for making a Ghost image to once you have a clean install ready. I can Ghost my work laptop with just a single DVD (~2GB image) as opposed to having multiple CDs or a smaller/older HD for that purpose.
