Default quadro freezes for mem>2GB on amd64

Installation of 64-bit SUSE 9.2 went without a hitch in my new workstation with ASUS SK8N motherboard, Opteron144 and 4 GB of memory (4 sticks of 1 GB registered PC3200 ram). The install detected my Quadro FX 700 video card, but there was no 3D acceleration as 'glxgears' produced 250 FPS. I used SUSE's Yast online update (YOU) to download the nvidia drivers. When I run 'glxgears' it runs for a few secs before my whole system locks up and all I can do is a cold boot. I installed the latest driver from nvidia's website (1.0-6629 for x86_64) but that didn't help either.

I took 2 sticks of ram out leaving 2GB of memory. Now 'glxgears' runs like a charm producing 14000 FPS.

The only reason I went with an AMD64 system is to use memory in excess of 2GB for my computation intensive workstation application. I vaguely remember reading other newsgroup postings on similar problems in AMD64 systems with insalled memory>2GB. Can somebody provide some help on how I can get the 3D/glx running with my nvidia card with 4GB of memory? Thanks a lot in advance.

From a console (no X) put in 4GB and run memtest86 (and wait.)

Thanks for your help. I am not sure what you meant by running memtest86 from console. I created a memtest86 boot cd and ran memtest86 test with 4GB ram installed. It didn't generate any errors.

I also tried adding append="mem=2048M" in grub's boot option with 4GB memory installed and it still hangs up on any 3D/glx related activity after a few secs.

I meant to say, avoid running other programs, and X software can be a real memory hog. Run out of ram and poof - you don't know for sure whether its hardware or software crashing. Perhaps one should run it in both modes - anyone with thoughts on this?

Get knoppix and run opengl stuff on it. It may be 32 bit, but its also a different kernel... anything to narrow things down.

Thanks again, but I don't think its because of x hogging memory.

I tried Quadro FX 500 and I have the same problem of system locking up. I have also tried 32 bit Fedora Core 3 with my Quadro with no luck. I can swap my Quadro card with a FX5200 128M and I have no problem.

Therefore, I suspect its the Quadro card driver clashing with 64 bit Suse 9.2 with such a big memory. But why?

I reported the problem to nvidia but I haven't heard back from them. I am bummed out!

By X software I meant Mozilla, Konqueror, Evolution etc. memtest86 tries to grab all the ram it can. If another program uses too much after memtest86 started... well I don't want to think about it.

Perhaps the nvidia installer customises the driver to your gpu when you install... meaning re-run the installer after switching cards.
