The patch isn't Linux 2.6 specific; if you haven't seen any of the error messages above, you probably needn't apply the patch, but there's no reason not to.
in regards to ACPI/APIC... i followed some instructions on minion... (i've had some weird problems involving one of my IDE drives... it will sometimes be assigned to a wrong IRQ..it's supposed to be irq 14, but sometimes it will get assigned to irq 7...no idea why, but my DMA speed was cut in half)

root (hd0,0)
kernel /kernel-2.6.8.1 root=/dev/sda3 pci=biosirq

will using that, circumvent or mess up the functionality of ACPI/APIC? i didn't intend for it to be "disabled" or not function properly... but sofar with that kernel line.. i haven't had my DMA transfers cut in half by having the drive assigned to the wrong irq...

Two interrelated questions:

1) is this patch suitable for the amd64 driver as well

2) or has this been applied to the new driver, so it would be just as easy/better all around to re-download the driver?

1) Yes.
2) The 1.0-6629 release does not include this fix. Future driver release will.
