Assorted questions...

Hey there everyone! Until recently I was one of those people with no appreciation for applications... only for games. Recently i have begun to change though and as i search for more and more apps, i began wondering what some of these things everyone talks about are... The following is a few progs that i always hear about, but don't actually know what they are for... if you guys could tell me, i would be grateful! Oh and let me know of any other progs I should know about!

Here's a head start - the first 2 are alternative web browsers, the third is an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) client and the last is a program used for skinning/theming Windows.
