Question RH8 - recompile required?

I can see that many people ARE recompiling their kernels, but is it absolutely necessary?

I can't even install RH8 (at least not in graphics mode, which is all I've attempted) because the install begins to go to graphics mode, the screen goes black, and it never comes back.

The probe DOES find the NVIDIA graphics card, so I'm not sure what the problem might be.

Thanks

Bill

So I guess that means your system uses the Nforce chipset??

If so, you will also need the Nforce drivers. Check on the Nvidia Website, and download the Nforce drivers. You may find that it will detect you system components better. Also check though this forum, as I remember reading that others have your basic setup too..

Default Thanks

Looking at the Nvidia site, I see the drivers as kernel download, and everything I see implies that a kernel rebuild is necessary to get the drivers installed???

Somehow I was hoping that the whole thing would be more modular than that, and my instincts tell me that I am missing something.

I've been doing this since 1982, so I'm not afraid to do the work, but I'm very concerned about the implications to my enterprise if I have to keep various kernels around for various machines.

Windows may suck, but at least there's usually a modular solution to getting a machine back up when it goes down...

Have you tried to install them without the kernel rebuild?? It's worth a try. I guess it will depend on what they mean by changing the kernel parms.. I can't help you much as my board uses the AMD-MPX chipset, and I don't seem to have any problems. (So far )

Default hmmm

Maybe I'll try that and see if I can use the install parm that indicates I have my own drivers.

Thanks for all of your help, and have a Happy New Year...
