Default Nvidia + agp + ali m1689 = freeze, reboot

Nvidia's module causes a kernel panic and system reboot when running opengl applications if AGP support is enabled on my system. If I disable AGP then there are no crashes but everything is slow as hell. I've tried the latest and last 3 versions of Nvidia's driver and they all cause system reboots when AGP is enabled. My motherboard chipset is the Ali m1689 on an AMD64 3500+ running debian sarge + 2.6.11 kernel (Which I had to upgrade to since prior kernels had no agp support for m1689)

Any suggestions?
