Default the 2.6.11 patch doesnt work

I can't seem to find anything on this in the forums...
I have applied the cumulative patch as described in http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...70&postcount=1 but the driver still doesnt work for me. i have a vanilla 2.6.11 kernel, Xorg 6.8.2 and the 6629 driver and it compiles fine, and loads fine, but when i actually launch the X server it fails. the Xorg log has this:

Code:
[root@chii log]# cat Xorg.0.log.old |grep NVIDIA
(II) Module glx: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
(II) Module nvidia: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
(II) NVIDIA X Driver 1.0-6629 Wed Nov 3 13:14:07 PST 2004

and dmesg has some lines like these (i think 2 per X startup attempt):

I don't think this problem is related to the patch; can you attach `modprobe` configuration file (i.e. /etc/modprobe.conf on most systems)?

this is my /etc/modprobe.conf:

Code:
options nvidia NVreg_EnableAGPFW=1 NVreg_EnableAGPSBA=1
options snd_cmipci joystick_port=1
alias eth0 b44
alias eth1 r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver 1.1.2
alias char-major-195* nvidia
i just tried with the 71.xx driver, and that doesnt work either. i suspect it might be related to gcc4. has anyone tested the driver with that compiler? its default on Fedora Core 4 now (test 1 coming out this tuesday). both my 2.6.11 kernel and the nvidia module were compiled with it. the kernel works fine, the nvidia driver doesnt (although it compiles fine, and the script tells me its installed correctly).

compiling that same driver on 2.6.10, both with gcc 3.4, works fine. i might try compiling a 2.6.11 kernel + nvidia driver with gcc 3.4, to see if that helps anything, but i need to find some time for it.

I don't think this problem is compiler related; when you say that Linux 2.6.10 and gcc 3.4 work, is that on the same machine with the current configuration? Does the problem go away if you comment out the "options nvidia..." line? If so, is there a trailing blank at the end of that line?

yes, there were 2 trailing blanks at the end of the line. removing them solves the problem.
and yes, i was using the same config in every kernel (its the same system). the blanks pose no problem on 2.6.10.

thanks for the help
