Exclamation Ongoing Laptop problems - at least six months

Hi,

I logged a problem with the nvidia linux driver months ago and a scan of the forum says others have the same problem and it still isn't fixed (even with the latest driver).

I can run fine on an external monitor, even twinview with the laptop display. If I specify "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP" and startx from the external monitor it correctly switches away and X starts on the laptop screen. However, if I run startx from a console on the laptop display my Inspiron 4100 freezes, requiring a hard power down. The lockup doesn't even write anything to the XFree86 log file.

Using an old driver (pre-4496) and a 2.4 kernel everything used to work perfectly. Then from driver 4496 onwards they have had this bug. I am not alone....see
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...light=Inspiron

It seems that the code to actually do graphics stuff works fine, but the startup section causes a crash. The laptop has a GeForce 2Go card and a 1024x768 screen.

I would love a solution. Others have tried about every sort of work around there is: see http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...light=Inspiron

Yours patiently,

Ian.

I forget to mention in my posts in the thread you cited that my computer has worked with the nVIDIA accelerated drivers. This was long time ago: at the time of when Red Hat 9 and I think the nVIDIA driver version was indeed something like 4496. That was the time when the XFree86 nv driver wasn't working and all the people was recommending to install Red Hat (or Mandrakelinux) as is, not to test the X config and after the reboot to install the nVIDIA drivers. Now, the situation seems to be reversed.
