Default Problems with 7167 and Kernel 2.6.8.1Mdk

Hello,

I use a fresh and updated install of Mandrake 10.1 Official with Kernel 2.6.8.1-24mdk-i586-up-1GB
Kernel sources are linux-2.6.8.1mdk , configured with the .config file from my /boot directory.
(I belive these are the right sources?)
The installer accept the source files and build the module, but give me an error then in cause of building the module with the wrong kernel sources (it says.... :-/ )

Here is the logfile my installer wrote, you can see the error near the end at the kernel messages.
What´s the problem?
Please help me, i already wasted 2 nights with driver installation attempts....

i solved the problem with i586 and i686 by copyying the kernel source directory to /root an start the installer with the --kernel-source-files option.
Now i get this error in the logfile:

nvidia: version magic '2.6.8.1-24mdk 586 gcc-3.4' should be
'2.6.8.1-24mdk-i586-up-1GB 586 gcc-3.4'

I think this is only problem with the name of the kernel, uname -r give "2.6.8.1-24mdk-i586-up-1GB 586"
Can i change this somewhere?
In kernel config files is nothing to change the name.

I had similar problem with a fresh 10.1 install. The kernel source installed was not at the same level than the loaded one (so bad)
I removed the bad src kernel then installed (urpmi) the right one and all goes fine.
There are some drawbaks having many kernel src installed, because the linux src directory may contain a wrong version.
Hope it will help.

yes, you are right, this was the cause of the problem with i586 and i686 (the line in the logfile)
But now i have different kernel names and this requires a kernel source for "2.6.8.1-24mdk-i586-up-1GB", because the installer grabs the kernel name with "uname -r" and compare the name of the running version with the source, i think.
The sources and the config are right, but there is no sourcepackage called 2.6.8.1-24mdk-i586-up-1GB, because the "up-to-1GB" are just a compiling option.
I believe recompiling the kernel with the name 2.6.8.1-24mdk in the makefile should be the way to get the driver work.

Please note that the version is picked up from the kernel source itself, rather than determined with `uname -r`; it seems that the kernel source tree's configuration doesn't reflect the running kernel (likely an EXTRAVERSION or LOCALVERSION mismatch).

No, uname -r shows the entries in the kernel Makefile.
I deleted the "up-to-1GB" extension in the version and compiled the kernel with the options from my /boot directory.
Then the installer works fine and now i have 3d acceleration.
GLXGears give me something like 740 fps/s with a Geforce2MX400 Card and a 500 Mhz K6.
The kernel is the same, but now it has a other name.
