Default OpenGL applications crash upon execution on x86_64 EM64

Hi there,

My system config,,,

IBM z PRO 6223 ( x86_64 ) intel EM64 XEON 3.6.
OS - RedHat Enterprise Linux AS 3.0 update 4 x86_64
nVidia Quadro FX 3400

X starts normally but as soon as I try to loading any OpenGL application system freezes and I have to do a cold boot.

I've tried the same on 32 bit Linux on the same hw and everything works. Perhapse problem would be on nVidia GLX drivers or RHEL x86_64...

Any comments?

Thanks.

I've got the same issue with a Dell 670 running RedHat WS 3.0 with a FX3400. X works fine, but any OpenGL (screen savers or apps) cause it to freeze. I've got the latest Nvidia driver but I'm wondering what kernel version you are running? I'm on 2.4.21-15.EL.

Can anyone out there help?

Ahobbs :

I have the same Dell WS670 box at work and have some things for you to try :

First edit /boot/grub/menu.lst
and add the parameter swiotlb=16384 to the grub line for the kernel
you are booting and see if this helps with OPENGL. Reboot and try to
run glxgears or something simple.

See if this helps. hmomeni cam try this also.

If not, Dell offers a pre-packaged video driver for the fx3400 that you can install. It's not the latest driver, but I tried it and it works.

It's at http://support.dell.com/support/down...leaseid=R90363

You need to install the DKMS package to use it and I'm not at work right now to have my install notes available. But you install it with the dkms command.

Also Dell also has a web site for linux on Dell's at http://linux.dell.com/
There are mailing lists and archives and the Dell guys that hang there are
very helpful.

Please let me know what happens.

THANKS for the tip. No more freezing! I had read about this, but couldn't find how to alter the swiotlb value. There are a couple others who have posted this same problem. I hope they will try your fix.

Incidently, I'm running the x86_64 version of Redhat 3. Will the Dell drivers work with that? I didn't try them initially because I was concerned that they would only with with the 32 bit RedHat.

Delll has the nvidia-1.0-6624-x86_64.tar.gz package for 64 bit.

I will post instructions on how to install this on Monday, when I go back to work.

For additional information on the SWIOTLB mechanism and the NVIDIA driver's use of it, please see the (1.0-6634 or 1.0-7167) README. Future Linux kernels will hopefully provide a better mechanism for allocating memory suitable for DMA to/from 32-bit PCI/PCI-E hardware.
