Default Quadro Fx 3400 + FC3 hard lockup when starting X

Hi,
I have a Dell Precision 670 dual processor (Xeon 3.2 Ghz, with HT enabled) with a Quadro FX 3400 card. Running Fedora Core 3 with livna.org updates (kernel 2.6.10-1.770_FC3smp). I installed driver version 7167.

Whenever I start X, 8 out of 10 times my machine locks up hard (not possible to ssh into it or even ping it!). It locks up right after going into graphical mode, but before displaying anything on the screen. The monitor just goes blank and then goes into power-save mode.

I tried both installing nVidia driver RPM from livna.org and building the driver myself, from nVidia package file. The results are identical. I also tried copying /dev/nvidia* to /etc/udev/devices, as suggested by various websites. The crash happens whether i do 'modprobe nvidia' before starting X or not. However, sometimes (2 times out of 10) X just starts up; I can do 'glxinfo' to verify that nVidia drivers are running, etc. I tried all permutations of 'modprobe nvidia' and running X, and do not see the pattern. After X successfully starts, I exit it, reboot the machine, try to start it again, and it locks up.

Please help. I attached output of nvidia-bug-report.sh, output of dmesg when startup is successful and after there is a crash, and Xorg.0.log after a successful startup and after lockup.

Oh, yeah, I tried disabling one of the processors and hyperthreading, booting a single-processor kernel, building the nvidia module for that kernel, and get the same result.

Thanks,
Greg Ushomirsky

redhat kernel are heavyly patched, could you try with a vanilla 2.6.11 kernel compiled from source ?

if it fail too, you can try to disable

big kernel lock
preemptive kernel

Hope this help
