What "relaxed timings" BIOS do you think this guy used?

Aopen FX 5900XT @ 467x935

Now to the overclocking: I flashed the bios to a modded 5900XT bios which has relaxed timings for maximum overclocking.

I just bought a Leadtek 5900XT and am hoping I'll be able to OC it a bunch once it arrives and I get it intalled and running, but I never really though about relaxing the timing like I would my PC memory to get higher frequencies.

Any clue what BIOS this guy might have used? I tried eBay emailing him, but he didn't answer.

If this isn't the place to ask OCing questions, please just let me know. I'm a new poster here, but I've viewed this site off and on for years and since getting my first Nvidia card since my GF2 GTS 64MB Hercules back in 2000 (with the exception of a breif interlude with a MSI FX5600), I figured now would be a good time to join.

The thread of the second link was specifically created to give 59xxx owners a reasonable laymans understanding of how BIOS mods worked. And thus if wanted, they could do their own mod thing rather than being limited to only using other peoples efforts.

Yeah, I'll probably see how far I can go with the traditional CoolBits route (wow, it's been a long time since I've used that app!) and take some benchmarks. Then do some BIOS modding and compair the benchmark results. Paired with an Artic Silencer NV3, I'm hoping I'll be able to push the Leadtek far.

Do you know off hand if the Leadtek 5900XT will take a 5900/5950 bios? Perhaps there's some compiled database out there with the info? FYI here's a shot of the card, if that could help answer the question. It chould be coming in tomorrow, can't wait!

5900u speeds should be easy to achieve, but 5950u and up depends on how good your particular Leadtek card really is.

But remember I also pointed you to a Guru3d thread on moded 59xx bioses. And if you had checked it out, you would have found a moded Leadtek A350XT BIOS linked at the first posting with stocks of 300/450/850. A BIOS which is probably not a bad place to start from.

What I asked was if this particular card would take a 5900/5950 (clarification: a non-XT) BIOS, as your "Basic FX59xx Bios Changes" post, if I'm not mistaken, talks of difficulty getting 5900XT cards not based on the 5900 PCB to accept a 5900 (or 5950) BIOS. Obviously the OCing potential of the XT board at hand is an issue, but I got the impression that most of the XT cards are inherently different (i.e. based on a "XT" rather than "non-XT" PCB).

Did I get that right? Anyway, apparently this card card can accept non-XT BIOSes (again, assuming the XT card will clock high enough) as per this mod:

I believe all original 5900XT type cards were deliberately made incompatible with higher cards BIOSes to stop what was happenning with 5900nu owners. Where 5900nu's were being easily turned into a 5950u by simply flashing with a 5950u BIOS. No mods, just a flash of a BIOS.

Because the XT's were of slightly different design including the use of 2.8ns memory chips, it was impossible to simply flash with any higher cards bios. Thats why a Moded 5900XT Bioses thread was first raised in Guru3D.

Later on manufacturers, presumably fighting for better market position, started selecting better components for their cards, including the use of 2.2ns memory chips. This now allowed many XT's to flash with modified BIOSes, including the 5950u. In fact if you check the first post of the Guru3d thread, you will notice there are underclocked 5950u bioses. Which were specifically put there so that all XT owners, regardless of memory chips fitted, would be able to safely boot and thus at least try compatability with a 5950u type bios.

Ah, I see, thanks! So memory really is the main issue, no the PCB.

I just got the card in, though I have yet to test it. It has Hynix HY5DU283222A memory. I guess most Leadtek's came with 2.2ns stuff to justify its praise in the forums?

The only issue is with achievable performance, not design or compatibility. You can ask 1.5volts of the core of a 5900xt (like a 5950U) however, it will most assuredly ignore it and feed 1.4v. Allowing for lower performance.

From what I've seen though, more 59xx are able to achieve huge core clocks even on 1.4v, but the ram clocks are another matter, and often determined by cooling (and ram ns of course).

I hit a wall a long time ago on my 5900xt, I'm now running it at 465/774, with tight latencies on the ram. With an Arctic Silencer. In its better days it did 475/830 but it overheated a lot and ram performance was so-so (because of the slack latencies I had to use).

HY5DU283222A = Hynix 2.8ns. Standard 5900xt. You're likely to achieve similar results to mine (MSI ViVo). Oh yeah, 59xx are dissed quite often. If you want fluidity and speed instead of bragging rights, switch to PS1.4 in rivatuner. Makes a huge difference in FarCry and other DX9 games, at little loss. (similar to the old FarCry Nv mixed mode)
