System - Slackware 10.1 / 2.6.10 kernel
Hardware - geForce4 Ti4200 (128MB) / Dual Athlon 2.4GHz Desktop - KDE 3.3 Issue - Recently I upgraded to the latest *-7174 drivers for my geForce4 Ti4200 (128mb). Previously used the 'minion.de' provided *-5328 drivers which worked flawlessly. Oddly, I'm having the toughest time getting /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to actually 'properly' load the 'nvidia' module. I believe this is a case of the kernel pre-loading the module (/etc/modprobe.conf), thus xorg will fail. I've spent hours reading through this forum and also using the ubiquitous 'google' search, but to no avail. Problem is that I'm forced to use 800x600 resolution and the fonts look horrible. I've attached /var/log/Xorg.0.log and nvidia-bug-report for your review. Below I've included the file permissions of the nvidia object files. -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 781464 Apr 10 02:46 > /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.o* > -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 791881 Apr 10 02:46 > /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so* Further description - During the initialization of X, I noticed that the proper 1280x **, but after the nvidia module unloads, the display reverts to the 800 x 600 resolution. Oddly, as 'lsmod' reveals that 'nvidia' module is loaded into the running kernel. Very strange. Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

Speedo is something font related but you shouldn't worry about it.
Modprobe has little to do with an X module. Modprobe is only for kernel modules. It seems that somehow X tries to load the module twice but can't(again nothing you should worry about). The 1280x1024 to 800x600 thing I would look towards your window manager. In some desktop enviroments you can actually specify a default resolution which doesn't affect the x.org config. |

Alas, it now works. Oddly, I wasn't getting the 1280x1024 option within the KDE display config GUI. Simply selecting the appropriate option solved my issue.
Thx for giving me a clue ![]() |
