Default XFX 6800GT PCI-E: 5fps or less in glxgears

Hello,

I'm running a 2.6.11.7 kernel in Gentoo Linux 2005.0. I just bought this computer and assembled it...

Asus P5GDC-V motherboard
1GB Corsair Valueselect DDR2-533 (two 512MB dimms)
540J - Pentium 4 3.2GHZ
XFX GeForce 6800GT PCI-Express

So I did a stage 1 install, built the kernel myself by hand (as I always do), and emerged nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx. (I've tried both 1.0.7174 and 1.0.6629). My first test was to fire up glxgears to make sure opengl-update had the system set up properly.

This is where I realized something was seriously wrong. The glxgears window didn't even fully paint before the system was brought to its knees. Eventually, after hammering on ctrl+c in my terminal window, trying to stop the resource hog, I see results in the neighborhood of 5 FPS - sometimes dropping as low as .5 FPS.

I did a ldd `which glxgears` to find out what GL libraries were being linked - it was linking the OpenGL ones. Just to make sure, I unemerged nvidia-glx and ran ldd again - libGL was not found.

I can get 2000-6000fps out of glxgears if I boot with acpi=off and noapic. However, the render freezes every few moments, dropping to low framerates (in the low thousands), and besides, everyone I've read of with a configuration in this neighborhood gets 10000FPS+.

Any ideas?

Also - there's no power cord or anything of that nature that came with this XFX card. The documentation mentions nothing. There is no spot on the card for a 4 pin power connector, but there is a 6 pin connector of some sort on the edge of the card, with an inside pin holster design that looks like an ATX power connector... do PCI-Express 6800GTs typically get enough from the bus, or do they need more?

That 6 pin plug needs to be plugged into your power supply.

Hope this helps.

(This 6 pin plug is more pci-express marketing then functionality, where a 4 pin molex capable of in excess of 20 amps is more then sufficient)

Great... uh, you know anywhere that sells these crazy things, since the manufacturer seems to have shorted me one and not mentioned it in any of the documentation?

Any online retailer should have them, just search for a pci express 6 pin power plug.
