Default X (and/or system) Freeze - new Sparkle 6600GT

Hello,

I've just purchased a new Sparkle 6600GT AGP card, and I'm finding problems with instability. X will just freeze up (mouse is frozen, screen is frozen), and sometimes I can switch to console 1 and kill the program (and X is fine!). Other times I can't fix it.

This seems to only occur when exceeding a high framerate where framerate exceeds 300, so lots of simple apps will do it - gl-117 fighter game, simple spinning cube opengl demo etc. It will usually happen within 2 minutes. The funny thing is that if I switch it to enable forced 16x AA + filtering then these programs won't crash anymore.

I ran the LightMap demo with bump maps from frustum|3D all night @26fps and there was no problem however.

I was advised to buy a new power supply so I have a Task 520W supply with 2 rails for 12v (17A and 20A), however my motherboard has no support for the special 4 extra pins for the 12v connector - so I am wondering if that could be the problem?

I tried disabling agp 8x (ie. - "NvAgp" "1"), but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

I have:
Athlon 2600+
VIA KM400-M2 motherboard
768mb ram (256 + 512)

Task "Jumbo fan" 520W power supply 20A@12v 17A@12v
Kernel 2.6.11.7, nvidia 1.0-7174 (newest)

Anyone seen anything similar? I can't seem to see any with the exact same issue.

Thanks,
Oliver Batchelor

Is there something like NVRM: Xid in the system log?

Yes!

It this when gl-117 crashes:

Apr 15 21:48:28 oliver kernel: NVRM: Xid: 23, L1 -> L0
Apr 15 21:48:28 oliver kernel: NVRM: Xid: 8, Channel 00000002

Even more strange, glReadPixels doesn't work either. It either takes _10 seconds_ to return (and returns garbage) or takes OR it crashes the system hard .. no return.

Thanks,
Oliver Batchelor

setting "NvAgp" "1" isn't going to change the agp rate.
a suitable way to do that is change the agp rate in the bios, if possible.
If not, I think you can add some option to the xorg.conf....

NvAgp "1, 2 or 3" where 1 is "nvidia"'s. 2 is "internal agpgart", and 3 is "use whats best".

Hi,

Thanks - however seems the agp rate isn't likely the issue. Seems I have the dreaded Xid bug - I wonder if glReadPixels() is any indicator of the driver problem? It hangs there without giving any Xid printout.

Ok - I have tested the card in a friends machine (with the same power supply however). This one also runs into the same problem, however there seems to be no trace of 'Xid' in his logs... after it freezes - the KDE screensaver seems by far the fastest to freeze of any app - also tried his doom 3 which crashed as well after quite some time.

Athlon 2600+
NF7? motherboard
6629 drivers 2.6.8.1 kernel this time
