ther is a patch for vesafb at
http://dev.gentoo.org/~spock/projects/vesafb-tng/

which does run fine with my nvidia card.

just if you have troubles with vesafb

Ah thanks for posting the info. I was using vesafb-tng up until recently to solve the problem. Unfortunately vesafb-tng isn't compatible with x86_64 that i recently switched to.
