Default serious problem when installing nvidia drivers

I am using suse 9.0(still) i just built a new system. i install the dummy drivers from YOU. and set up the graphics system fine. then when i install the newest drivers from nvidia, my monitor some how switches to another model that doesnt share the same vsynce and hsync settings as what i really have. so my monitor goes blank, and says "sync out of range" on the screen. any ideas?

You will need to adjust (or even remove) horizontal sync and vertical refresh rates in your X config. Give the wrong numbers and you can damage your monitor - lucky yours is smart enough to pick them up. Your monitor manual should have the limits - note they depend on screen resolution. Or look them up with an internet search. Make a backup of your X config first, it will be in /etc/X11/.
