Default Which NVIDIA card to run on Linux 2.6.11

Howdy,

Can anyone recommend a midlevel performance/budget NVIDIA graphics card for Linux? 3d accelerated, preferably without crashing

I'm thinking about switching from ATI to NVIDIA only because it's supposed to have more stable drivers for Linux. Is that generally true? For example, Warcraft III would freeze my system with ati proprietary openGL drivers every time run with wine or cedega. I hear other people bitching about that. Anybody had some success with Warcraft III on NVIDIA?

Please, I hate dual booting

Thanks a bunch

Umm...take your pick?

I used to runwarcraft 3 with an fx5900 modded to 5950u.
I currently have a 6200 soft modded to 6600.

Take your pick. 6600 or 6600GT are good choices nowadays for low end/mid range.

Or let me put it this way - GeForce 6600 or GeForce FX-5700LE, which one has a "better" linux support. Or maybe it doesn't make difference?

I know NVIDIA has unified driver something or other. Does that mean all GeForce cards would be supported equally well under linux?

I think you'll find that the grass is definitely greener on the nvidia side as far as drivers go (pun intended ). I have had absolutely no problems with any linux driver since purchasing my 6800GT...

I've had nothing but problems with my 6800GT in linux.

An FX 5700 or 5900 might be a better choice in terms of support, with OK speed.

My 5900 FX "sorta" works OK with 1.0.7191. It's the best release we've had in a while, but the situation is nowhere near acceptable. I'm talking even the basics of 2D rendering aren't up to par. Unless you already have corrupted displays and all kinds of other BS with your ATI card, I can't really recommend the switch.

Hey guys... just bought a 6600GT (leadtek winfast). So far I can tell it works perfect under linux, with UT2004 and Warcraft III. Still waiting to try Doom 3
I'm quite happy with it

I have a go6800 (laptop 1920x1200) with kernel 2.6.11.4. No problems (well a minor timing problem at initialization... I just do an "strace X" kill the server and then restart X). But apart from that, it works and is very stable. I'm the one that posted the 3dmark2001SE scores a while back under wine... but ut2004/doom3/etc native all work fine as well as VMware 5 with 3D accel.

My other machine is running a lower 2.6 kernel with a 6600GT.. it also is very stable.

Can I crash it? Well yes... but usually I know when I'm going to crash it (e.g. trying to overclock video, etc).
