I'd suggest four DIMMs of PC3200 512M at circa $40 each.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ubmit=Property Look for lifetime warranty. You never know when you might need it. I've had big-name RAM fail after months of use, RAM that passed overnight MemTest86 runs on initial purchase. If you ask for brand advice you'll get a different recommendation from every person who replies. I tend to limit my purchases to Mushkin and Corsair for high end systems, and Crucial for low-end systems. That being said, I tested some no-name DIMMs recently and Wintec 3-8-8 PC3200 actually performed at 2-5-5 @ 200MHz.

4x512M would be cheaper than 2x1G.

try to save your money. try to save $250 and you can get a good pair of 2 x 1GB sticks which run A LOT better than 4x512MB.
