Default FC4 SMP kernel module build fails, UP build OK

Machine: Dual Athlon, Tyan 2466N, Ti4600/NV25
OS: FC4 upgrade to a working FC3 system, kernel: 2.6.12-1.1398_FC4smp

Problem: the nvidia kernel module will not build on this machine when running the SMP kernel. It builds and works just fine when running the uniprocessor kernel.

I do have the kernel-devel-2.6.12-1.1398_FC4 RPM installed. I also tried forcing a build on the SMP kernel using --kernel-source-path /usr/src/kernels/2.6.12-1.1398_FC4. In that case, the kernel module appeared to build but would not install, and the following error message was generated by the installer:

ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. This is most likely
because the kernel module was built using the wrong kernel source files.
Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your
kernel; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you have the
'kernel-source' rpm installed. If you know the correct kernel source
files are installed, you may specify the kernel source path with the
'--kernel-source-path' commandline option.
-> Kernel module load error: insmod: error inserting './usr/src/nv/nvidia.ko':
-1 Invalid module format

There does not appear to be a kernel-devel-2.6.12-1.1398_FC4<smp> RPM.

For completeness, attached in a single zip file pls find: (1) the output of nvidia-bug-report.sh for a good uniprocessor build, and (2) the unsuccessful build attempt on an SMP system when forcing the kernel-source-path to the kernel headers provided by kernel-devel-2.6.12-1.1398_FC4.

My apologies if this thread is not new - a quick search didn't turn up anything close.

Thanks.

it looks like the problem might be due to a lack of the kernel-smp-devel RPM on the system. Fedora packages a separate kernel-devel RPM for its SMP kernel, which is named kernel-smp-devel.

Please run the following command:
rpm -q kernel-smp-devel

If you see the following, then you do not have the RPM installed, and will need to do so:
package kernel-smp-devel is not installed

I have the same problem. I installed kenel-smp-devel but nothing has changed.
Can anybody help me plese? Is there anybody that has installed nvidia drivers on FC4? How?

After installing kernel-smp-devel, the nvidia kernel module builds/installs just fine. All is well - thanks for the suggestion.

dragos13, i'm typing this from a FC4 system with the nvidia driver, so yes, it works fine. Please post your install log from /var/log if you're still having problems.

Same here. FC4 x86-64 SMP. Driver built just fine.

Is /lib/modules/2.6.12-1.1398_FC4smp/build/ alive and well?
