The 64-bit kernels and drivers work fine for me for both 64-bit and 32-bit games, 3D and 2D and any mix of the two - even with TV-out enabled. What problems are you experiencing exactly?

I play Doom3 (32 bit) just fine on AMD64 and I didn't fiddle with the drivers at all.

Well except the newest drivers with new Fedora kernels hang the machine if you start, then shutdown and then start X11.

None actually, I'm just saying that gamers shouldn't run 64-bit. The reason is simple, it offers no advantage over 32-bit, rather the opposite because of lacking driver development. It just doesn't make sense, they don't need it.

What about running the 64bits binary of unreal 2?
And don't forget that the kernel is always running in 64bits
mode, so the kernel is faster.

Actually, it's slower. 64 bit doesn't do anything for speed.

That's very convincing if you just state it like that. How about the fact it has twice as many registers? Or that you don't have to use those ugly PAE extensions if you want to avoid flushing the TLB on each address space switch? You really have to do better if you want to convince anybody.

As noted, a few registers more do some good.

And not to mention native 64 bit integer arithmetic which is used much more often than people realize. 32 bits just don't cut it for counting any kind of event or data size on disk these days.

And of course the fact that 2D seems to be insufferably slow on the 64bit drivers, making me think about going back to a 32bit system on my Athlon.

So, what in the world makes you think twice as many registers equals twice the speed or any speed-increase at all? There's been plenty of benchmarks proving no speed increase and in many cases a degradation of speed. Google around a bit, and you'll get the hard numbers.
