Default Quadro FX 4400 on 2.6.11.5

Six months ago I bought a ASUS NCT-D motherboard, with dual xeons 3.0Ghz (x86_64), a pny quadro FX 4400. I had a hard time to make it work with linux. We tried several distributions before we found out that the only distribution that worked was Fedora. Since then I've been using fedora core 3 with 2.6.9-1 kernel.

My machine got compromised recently
(I guess thanks to my outdated fedora kernel/packages). I would like to reinstall everything including a new stable kernel. The problem I was having 6 months back, still remains.

startx hangs all the drivers I have tried from nvidia's site. Here is what /var/log/messages shows when it hangs.

Anyone can help me find out what
is conflicting with the driver - kernel
combo that causes the system to hang.
It seems that its a soft-hang, caps-lock
and num-lock still work (at least the
last time I tried).

Thanks,

Hmm, have you ever tried FS other than ext3? e.g ReiserFS, XFS, JFS, ext2(just for testing)... or can you reproduce this _abnormal_ behavior _without_ nvidia's driver loaded?

I think I tried using reiserFS when I tried
Mandrake. Did not help.

It does not happen when nvidia's drivers are not installed. I can run in some kind of emulation mode.

Thanks,

Default Re: Quadro FX 4400 on 2.6.11.5

piyush,
As chunkey mentioned, if you look at the call trace in that Oops, its all filesystem related items, and there are no 'nv' related entries. You didn't mention which kernel version (unless your reference to 2.6.11.5 is it) you're running, but if its not the latest 2.6.12 for FC3, you should upgrade to that. If it is, then you should probably submit a bug report to Fedora's bugzilla. You should also check to see if this behavior persists with the 'vesa' or 'nv' X drivers.

Also, have you considered that perhaps you have faulty hardware? It seems suspicious that you've tried so many different distributions and have had the same problem on all of them.

Thanks,
Lonni

Amazingly my xorg does not show anything wrong...or at least I dont see it. I've edited it to fit inside 15k characters that this post allows..

Thanks,

Hi Lonni,

Thanks for your post. If I upgrade to
FC 2.6.12, I have the same problem. I also tried FC4.

Since I have tried so many different distributions with the same problem, yes you are right, it could be my hardware. But then it doesnt make sense that it works perfectly with
2.6.9-1 kernel+Most drivers from nvidia's site.

The problem was not there when I
installed nv initially. But now the machine does not work if i change my xorg.conf from "nvidia" to "nv". It hangs with a wierd screen with dots and green lines and the mouse moves...

Here is an xorg.conf that works (vesa)
