Hi.
I am trying to get the nvidia driver running on my debian unstable distribution here. All I get though are consistent crashes right after a correct initialisation. I am running: Linux version 2.6.11-1-k7 (dannf@firetheft) (gcc version 3.3.6 (Debian 1:3.3.6-6)) #1 Mon Jun 20 21:26:23 MDT 2005 xserver-xorg 6.8.2.dfsg.1-5 the X.Org X server and installed NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7676-pkg1.run by hand. The card is "nVidia Corporation NV35 [GeForce FX 5900XT] (rev a1)" Then the x-server crashes in this location: #0 0xb7e8d35d in vfprintf () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6 #1 0xb7eaf4e1 in vsnprintf () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6 #2 0x080eacaf in LogVWrite () #3 0x080eaeba in VErrorF () #4 0x080eaed6 in ErrorF () #5 0x0808809b in xf86SigHandler () #6 <signal handler called> #7 0xb7eb9236 in realloc () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6 #8 0x080e8ed4 in Xrealloc () #9 0x080d2e7c in CreateNewResourceType () #10 0xb7dcbc54 in __glXLookupID () from /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so #11 0xffffffff in ?? () #12 0xffffffff in ?? () #13 0xbffff968 in ?? () #14 0x080d1a35 in main () Seems like it is trying to produce some error and is killed inbetween. The log looks absolutely fine. Kernel module is loaded and so on.... Do you have any hints? If you have please contact me via email also mb@smooth.de Thank you Matthias |

What cpu? I ask because amd ones are picky about ram and nvidia drivers make it worse. Use memtest86 to check your ram to eliminate this. Does the xorg "nv" driver work?

Interesting enough is, that I now have a workaround. Everytime my system boots again I have the same problem. If I run the installation routine and then start X without reboot, it works. Does that ring a bell? Sounds like the init-Scripts are not performing some feat the installation does... Matthias |

Post your xorg.conf. Maybe we'll find something...

Do you use debian's (non-free) nvidia-glx packages?
Or do you use the official NVIDIA-Linux-x86-$VERSION-pkg?.run)? |

mbab,
This is a known problem on Debian when you mix/match the Debian nvidia driver packages with the official nvidia driver packages. This is being caused by an init script in /etc/init.d/ called something like nvidia-tls which is causing breakage on each bootup. If you're going to use the official NVIDIA driver package, then you need to disable/remove that init script. Thanks, Lonni |

Hi Lonni.

![]() Interesting enough that I deinstalled all debian packages before installing the nvidia-driver package. But the init-script was obviously not removed properly. I saw it earlier but I thought it belonged to the original nvidia package. Cool hint, thank you very much! Matthias |
