Default Fedora Core 3/driver 7676 install problem

OK, I'll admit it. I'm a Linux noob. I'm comfortable with RPMs, but I've yet to compile my own kernel.

Earlier install attempts said there was no precompiled driver for the 2.6 kernel. (Um, why not? Hasn't 2.6 been around a while now? What's the holdup?) I downloaded kernel-2.6.12 from the RedHat site. The source appeared to be in several tarballs, which I extracted in place using the default directories in the tarballs. The path to the kernel makefile is /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/linux-2.6.12, so that's where I specified the --kernel-source-path.

The error I got is in the install log quoted below.

installed on your system. If you specified a separate
output directory using either the "KBUILD_OUTPUT" or
the "O" KBUILD parameter, make sure to specify this
directory with the SYSOUT environment variable or with
the equivalent nvidia-installer command line option.

Depending on where and how the kernel sources (or the
kernel headers) were installed, you may need to specify
their location with the SYSSRC environment variable or
the equivalent nvidia-installer command line option.
ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file....

As far as I can tell, the source IS the correct version, and I didn't specify any KBUILD parameters. I thought I DID specify the kernel source location using the command line option, so I'm stuck. A forum search turned up similar problems in a previous driver version. If it's the same problem, surely it has been addressed by now.

BTW, FedEx says my new 6800 will arrive tomorrow. I'd love to have this working by then. If I have to, I'll back down to Red Hat 9, because I've seen the nVidia drivers actually work with it. But what a searing, stabbing pain in the backside that would be. (We're way past irritated frustration already. Why so many hoops to jump just to get 3D acceleration in Linux? I can't possibly be the only one having this difficulty!)

Thanks in advance for any and all assistance.

tnandy2,
All that is required is the kernel & kernel-devel RPMs. No source code is neccesary. If you're unsure of what you need, please run this command and post the output:
rpm -qa | grep kernel

Thanks,
Lonni

Thanks for responding so quickly.

# rpm -qa | grep kernel
kernel-2.6.12-1.1372_FC3
kernel-utils-2.4-13.1.49_FC3
kernel-2.6.9-1.667

I hope this has nothing to do with it, but I tossed kernel-2.6.9-1.667 out of grub.config. This box now dual boots Win2k and FC3 at 2.6.12-1.1372 only.
