Default Really shabby GL performance issue

Hi all,

I have been having some major performance issues with OpenGL in Mandriva Linux LE 2005.
However, it only seems to effect games.
GlxGears, running at 800x600 gets 844.800FPS, and any of the OpenGL visualisations run smooth no matter what size they run at.

However, when ever I try to run America's Army, Unreal Tournament, etc, I get about 3FPS.
I know something is not right, as I read a few other posts on a similar subject and my GlxInfo output is not right, but I don't know how to go about fixing my problems.

Here's the output from:

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/cards/0
Model: GeForce4 Ti 4600
IRQ: 16
Video BIOS: 04.25.00.26.00
Card Type: AGP

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
Status: Enabled
Driver: AGPGART
AGP Rate: 4x
Fast Writes: Disabled
SBA: Disabled

Code:
direct rendering: No (should be 'Yes')
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
...
client glx vendor string: SGI (should be 'NVIDIA')
...
can you try to reinstall the _driver_ and try again...
(If you doesn't work, run nvidia-bug-report.sh and attach the created log...)

Hi, thanks for the reply.
I have an idea whats wrong, and I think its because before I figured out how to get the NVidia driver to install, I was trying Mesa out.
Because Mesa was present in the system at the time of the driver install, the files got confused and it has resulted in my current config.

Should I uninstall Mesa first, then re-install the NVidia driver?
Will that hopefully sort it out?

Weird, normally you don't have to remove the mesa-packages... you can do it, but nvidia's installer will take care of it...

Default Re: Really shabby GL performance issue

Ok, I tried again, and this time it wouldn't compile at all.

I tried re-installing the kernel source, but it still can't compile the nvidia.ko module.

Eventually, I messed around with the wrong setting and cabbaged my system.
So, I have a clean system now, with only the kernel source 2.6 and kernel source stripped 2.6 installed, and it still can't compile.

I would post the nvidia installer log file, but I don't know much about file permissions under Linux, and every time I try to copy it, it's still a root owned file.
Kind of embarrassing, but I've never had to swap file ownership before

Any help would be appreciated

Hmm, nvidia-installer.log should be _readable_ for everyone... (normally)

Here's a (brief) Introduction for Linux`s File security:

Linux's Access rights (the best thing I've found so far)!
(or read the man-pages)

OR: (short version)
(open a console as root and
Code:
cd /var/log/
chmod a+r nvidia-installer.log
now, it should be readable!

Ok, I did that, and got access to the file thru a non root user
Thanks for the link by the way

Here's my log file:

Code:
ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. This is most likely
because the kernel module was built using the wrong kernel source files.
Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your
kernel; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you have the
'kernel-source' rpm installed. If you know the correct kernel source
files are installed, you may specify the kernel source path with the
       '--kernel-source-path' commandline option.

Code:
   nvidia: version magic '2.6.11-12mdk 686 gcc-3.4' should be '2.6.11-6mdk 686 gcc-3.4'
So, the kernel complains because the driver you`ve builded used another kernel-source...

so, either you upgrade the kernel to 2.6.11-12mdk, or get 2.6.11-6mdk's source package... and try again...

Cool
I got it going, I can't believe I missed that.
But then again, I wasn't sure what I was looking for.

I had used URPMI to install the Kernel Source, and it had installed the wrong one.
I installed the one of the DVD, and it all burst into life.
Now, I'm getting my proper frame rates

Thanks again for the input
