Default Apple 30" Cinema HD Modeline

Ok, so I purchased the nifty 30" Apple LCD to put on my GeForce 6800 Ultra 512, with one Dual-link DVI connector. I've read other posts that claim to have gotten it to work at its native 2560x1600 resolution, but I am a failure.

Does anyone know the secret incantation used to get what I desire?

I've tried each of:
Modeline "2560x1600" 268 2560 2608 2640 2720 1600 1603 1609 1646 -HSync +Vsync
As reported by EDID and
Modeline "2560x1600" 348.16 2560 2752 3032 3504 1600 1601 1604 1656 -HSync +Vsync
As reported by gtf

Both modelines will emit only:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Not using mode "2560x1600" (bad mode clock/interlace/doublescan)

Of course, the lower native resolution of 1280x800 works fine, but isn't as pretty. I should probably add that I'm using the 1.0-7676 driver since I have a sneaking suspicion this may have broken in a more recent release.

Help?

What board did you exactly buy as I'm not aware of dual link 6800 boards except for the 6800 Ultra DDL made for apple. Further note that 1.0-7676 has some modeline issues, try a previous 7xxx driver.

It's an EVGA 6800 Ultra with 512 megs of RAM. I got it just before the 7800 was released (cue kicking of self). I think it was the only card on the market with a dual-link port on a 6800 meant for the PC. They were shipping them with VoodooPCs.

I think I'm gonna upgrade to a 7800 soon though.

In any case, I do get this in my xorg log:
(--) NVIDIA(0): DFP-0: maximum pixel clock: 165 MHz
(--) NVIDIA(0): DFP-0: External Dual Link TMDS

I tried the same two modelines on the 1.0-7667 driver with the same results. Do I have to go back further?

Start X with this command:
startx -- -logverbose 5
and then check the EDID in your X log for the right modeline. if you need help, please post a bug report.

Thanks,
Lonni

Do you have to enable IgnoreEDID for that Monitor?

As reported in the original post, I tried to use the modeline from the EDID info queried from the panel:

(II) NVIDIA(0): Supported additional Video Mode:
(II) NVIDIA(0): clock: 268.0 MHz Image Size: 641 x 401 mm
(II) NVIDIA(0): h_active: 2560 h_sync: 2608 h_sync_end 2640 h_blank_end 2720 h_border: 0
(II) NVIDIA(0): v_active: 1600 v_sync: 1603 v_sync_end 1609 v_blanking: 1646 v_border: 0
(II) NVIDIA(0): Monitor name: Cinema HD
(II) NVIDIA(0): Monitor name: Display

When I used the modeline:
Modeline "2560x1600" 268 2560 2608 2640 2720 1600 1603 1609 1646 -HSync +Vsync

The log message is:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Not using mode "2560x1600" (bad mode clock/interlace/doublescan)

Xorg then decides to use the next highest validated mode the card supports (1600x1200) which doesn't work with the panel, so I get a blank screen and a flashing indicator light until I switch back to 1200x800.

(**) NVIDIA(0): Validated modes for display device DFP-0:
(**) NVIDIA(0): Default mode "1600x1200": 162.0 MHz, 75.0 kHz, 60.0 Hz
(**) NVIDIA(0): Default mode "1400x1050": 145.1 MHz, 76.5 kHz, 70.0 Hz
(**) NVIDIA(0): Default mode "1400x1050": 122.0 MHz, 64.9 kHz, 60.0 Hz
... etc ...

Wow, I can't believe I didn't try that. I had been using a CRT up until this point and the other port was the only one that functioned so I assumed it was the primary. But switching ports and adding a BusID gave me the resolution I desire.

PS: PRETTY!!!

Are you absolutely sure it's dual-link? A few card manufacturers have mislead or outright lied (MSI) about this capability before, and when I pressed them they said "ok.. yeah, we said dual-link DVI, what we really meant was it has dual single-link DVI ports."

This is a very bad sign. 165 MHz is nowhere close to enough to run 2560x1600. That modeline required 268 MHz.

That's a positive sign! But why a card would have a Dual-Link TMDS and yet not have the bandwidth to support the higher resolutions escapes me.

EDIT: Ah, never mind then, if you got it working! The number it reported must have been for the single-link port. Congrats.

You don't see any strange image flashes running full-screen games at that resolution, do you? I'll post another thread about that..
