Default sata_nv module load causes system freeze on Debian install

Asus A8N-SLI Premium
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+
OCZ EL Platinum 2GB
2 x Western Digital Raptor SATA 10000 RPM 74 GB

System as supplied with 1005 BIOS, successfully installed Win XP, SP2, etc. on one drive. Used AMD64 netinst iso to install Debian on other drive, as well as GRUB bootloader - no problems. Subsequently reinstalled WinXP, upgraded chipset drivers and BIOS to latest available. GRUB in MBR overwritten, so tried to use same Debian CD to recover, but now when attempting either rescue or fresh install, system hangs on loading of sata_nv module. This worked before, so the only thing I can think of that might have caused the problem is the BIOS change - but I'm open to suggestions? Kernel on the netinst CD was 2.6.12. Is there an updated sata_nv?
