2 missiles can do it, but a lot of times, the second one won't finish it completely and give the squad a chance to bail out before exploding.

where, in comparison, a jet or bomber will detonate immediately upon impact of the second.

I guess it depends on where the stinger hits the target. Recently I managed to hit some nub flying a bomber about 3 times near the wing area before he completely blew up.

Whereas when I had aimed properly, ie placed the crosshair above the body of the jet 2 stingers where sufficient to cause it to blow up.

yeah - there's definitely area-specific damage in this game.
