Penny Arcade co-founders Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik have fired back, accusing Thompson of hypocrisy in kind. After learning that Thompson would not make any donations, the pair announced they have given $10,000 in his name to the Entertainment Software Association Foundation. The ESAF, which recently completed a charity auction, pledges monetary support to such philanthropic causes as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and the Child Welfare League of America.

He actually called the police on penny arcade for being mean... jesus christ, hes allowed to say that the guys at Rockstar should be slaughtered for creating a "cop-killing murder simulation" but as soon as someone calls him on his BS and makes him look like an ass he cries and calls it "criminal harassment".

I really doubt hes going to accomplish anything by this except make himself look like an idiot. He might end up making some gaming community people look dumb too (like penny arcade...) but as of right now he's the one that looks like a tool

Youth crime rate is going down (at least in the US); this would prove that evergrowing market of videogames has not affected at all the crime rate among minors.

I think I've read that article before... its a good one. One thing thats funny though is "homocide offending by age" chart that shows a huge spike around the time the Playstation, Doom and Wolfenstien 3d came out. (yes im kidding, I realize it was already rising before then).

As much as I agree that the videogame market hasn't changed crime much, that's not necessarily causal. Sure, there's a correlation, but you could easily assert (and have no real evidence to the contrary) that without the video game market, crime would've gone down even faster. I should stress - I agree that video games have stuff-all to do with crime. At the end of the day, people need to take responsibility for their own actions (in my opinion), but figures such as this don't necessarily make a logical attack on the oppositions arguments - they merely weaken their plausibility.

EDIT: Admittedly, that attack on plausibility is pretty significant. They can't have it both ways on this front. If they want to claim that video games have a huge impact on the temperament of those who play them, and if there's been a negative correlation between video game production and crime, they'd have to assert that there was some causal link. If they claim that video games have no impact on the decreasing crime rate, how can they make a valid claim that video games are such a negative influence at all?
