Default Doom 3/Quake 4 FPS *HALVED* while online

OK, I've got a curiousity for you all:-

When I run either Doom 3 (1.3) or Quake 4 while online, the game runs at about half the framerate that it normally does. The ISP software in question is AOL (9.0). Nope, nothing like this happens with any other app, just D3. My firewall (McAfee) is set up correctly to allow both doom3.exe and quake4.exe access to the internet. I've scanned for virus/spyware/trojan possibilities, found nothing. I've also done the other obvious thing and checked running processes (via task manager) and no new/unusual processes show up, thus CPU/system RAM usage is normal. Like I said, virus possibilities have been 99% ruled out... Oh yeah, and I've tried to reinstall all the apps in question, no difference.

Note that the exessive lag does not only occur when I connect to a server (suggesting incorrect network settings), but rather the whole engine is slowed down by around 30 FPS.

Also note that Q3A/CoD/RTCW run 100% (125 FPS), and although these titles are considerably less hardware demanding, this suggests to me that it is not an OpenGL error somewhere down the line.

All suggestions welcomed.

Thanks.

I would suggest ditching AOL. From what I understand, the AOL software intends to be more than it should be and it can screw sh*t up in your computer.

Fair comment, although the thing is this never used to happen (w/ AOL+D3 engine running); it only started a week or so ago. I can't think of any changes/updates made during that time...
