Default Re: Q4 Strafe Jumping

Just wanted to say, anyone who was a regular Q3 OSP player(such as myself) knows about the UPS(units per second) and how it shows your movement speed. We always had that shown right under fps and in game timer. Basically its Q3's unit of measure to show how much speed your attaing via strafeing. If your a really good mover you can hit over 700UPS which if I recall correctly is as fast or somewhat faster than a rocket.

oh wow..

You know, you just opened up some very interesting memories..

I now know what your talking about.. I quit the Q2 scene before it got too widespread..

But yea. bunny hopping.. and strafe jumping.. Its funny cause I did that naturally, and didn't exactly realize what or how it worked, until someone pointed it out to me.. I don't remmeber the effects being that extreme in Q2 though.. or perhaps nobody was serious in trying the time I played.

I remember the frame rate weirdness too.. Cause on certain level, there was this windows in Q2 CTF with the grapple hook, that you can grapple and pull your way thru, at a certain angle, and set to a certain frame rates.. It was a new trick that not many people understood at the time..

I then stopped playing Q2 becuase I moved off campus, and didn't have highspeed inet access. and never got into q3 really caues my computer was too slow, and I was too busy... and didn't play anythign online really till UT2k4 came out and finally got a new computer and broadband when I graduated and moved.

Ahh, so now I did some reading, and realize that the later players took it to an extreme. Ahh.. Dang, I've been out of it for so long, that I'm basically a noob again.. Which is quite depressing if you saw how many hours I played Q2CTF for that year.. ugh..

The something with the mouse and strafe keys is this:
one must be holding one of strafe keys, and the mouse should be turned slightly in the same direction during pressing of the jump key.

Here's a video in which I first did a series of strafejumps in the same direction (only right strafe was used), and then I did an alternating series in both directions to keep going straight. Notice subtle turning of the mouse to the right as I land and press jump again. It can be seen much better in the second half with alternating jumps.

Hmm. What plug in or player do I need to watch this? WMP will not let me play it. Says error downloading codec.
