Default X-Com game came out recently?

I don't know about anybody else, but I was a huge fan of the x-com games back in the early 90's. Just yesterday I happened to stumble upon a webpage for a game called UFO: Aftermath that came out back in 2003. I did a little more reading and it seems that this game was created by the same dev team that created the original X-Com (not the crappy sim games.)

Hmm...why am I just now hearing about this? I tried the demo, the game seems pretty good so far.

It seems that earlier this month, a new game came out called UFO: Aftershock which is supposed to be a sequel to Aftermath. Has anybody tried this game? I can't seem to be able to find a demo for it, and their main webpage is in german.

Thats what I would like to know. I don't like modern games nearly as much as I liked those older games back then. Take WC3 for example. That game sucks balls compared to what WC2 was in its day.

Fancy 3D-graphics. Developers put all their effort in high-detailed (but relatively small) environment/models and tend to forget the actual content.

Gaming just got huge.

It gets big, they want to appeal to mass audiences, which makes games teh suck.

Not only that, the development costs for games is enourmous, in order for them to make decent profit, they need to make a title that will sell.

While a game like X-Com may be fun, it just doesn't sell to mass audiences.

Thumbs down Re: X-Com game came out recently?

The demo can be found at http://www.ufo-aftershock.com/pages/download.html. The site also has a FAQ.

The demo feels very similar to Aftermath, although some improvements have been made (you can enter buildings, which you couldn't in Aftermath, a big drawback to me).

As a huge X-COM fan, I had high hopes for Aftermath, but it turned out to be 'a little' disappointing. On the surface, it had the core X-COM features (such as the geosphere or research), but it lacked depth... Bases could be built, but you had no influence on the facilities there, combat was simplified (you couldn't even enter buildings), the LOS and pathfinding was poor (or even apalling when inside UFOs), and so on. To make things worse, they decided to use a fixed resolution of 1024 x 768, which also seems to be the case with Aftershock (judging by the demo).

I'm not saying these are bad games in themselves, but for me as a hardcore X-COM fan, Aftermath was a letdown and Aftershock just doesn't seem to promise much more. BTW, both games were developed by a Czech company, ALTAR Interactive, and not the original X-COM team.

Well, sorry for the rant, I'm also increasingly disappointed in the latest developments in gaming, content being increasingly marginalized to give priority to superficial appeal.

UFO:Aftershock is out in Europe and Altar just found a US distributor. It got some good reviews from the European press and the fan base seems to think that it's a pretty good game with some buginess.
I've been an XCOM fan since 1994 and still play it from time to time. I was very disappointed in UFO:Aftermath. It seems like Altar addressed some of the criticisms like non-enterable builings, destructable environments, base building and base defense.

So in aftershock you can actually build bases like you used to in x-com?
