No ****pits?! At All? Kinda odd since in X2 you couldn't NOT have a ****pit in first person. This bothers me. The 3D ****pit was a huge boost to immersion.

I hope they didn't make too many concessions for the Xbox 360 version. One of the things I liked about X2 was how much of a PC oriented game it was. It just felt like an old school PC game, with all the complex key commands and the desperate need for a flightstick. When I heard they were going to make it for the Xbox360 my heart sank. I mean I don't want a Battlecruiser 3000 type game here, but cummon! No ****pits? They're gonna dumb down one of the smartest games ever to grace the PC.
You think they're gonna have dual monitor support, like X2? I'm beginning to doubt it. Sill can't wait for this game though.

ON more thing. This game was huge in Europe, which is the only reason they made X3. We can thank the Europeans for making, and apprieciating smart games.

Yeah no kidding. For just a split second you had me thinking they were creating another Wing Commander game. I almost jumped out of my chair.

Yup, unfortuntely it seems like a fact. Maybe they will add ****pits later thru a patch but I know for sure that there will be a ****pit mod from fans. I didn´t even know if there will be a X360 version. lol

At least there is dual monitor support:

BTW, thanks and you are welcome!

Agent Kay,

P.S. X3 was released in the UK yesterday, so you can check out the egosoft forums what people think about it and how it performs on their computers. Seems like the 1.2 patch addressed many issues and improved a lot of things. Sucks for them that it actually didn´t ship with that patch, since it barely missed the gold date, but at least its not all that large. (80MB)

They haven't even started on a Xbox360 version yet, let alone nobody is sure if there is actually going to be one or not. If there is one, the developers have said that the game wont have as many features and content as the pc version. THe developers have continuesly said that they made no consessions for an xbox version. In fact the improvement they have made are based on feedback from the fans. Anyways here is a quote about the ****pit thing, after reading this I understand why they got rid of them, especially considering that the ****pit were just horrible and boring, since you couldn't tell the difference between the different alien races ships of the same class.

I didnt read this whole thread but I can imagine that quite a few people are protesting because the game will not have ****pits. But I think some of you are getting this the wrong way: Of course the game still features the ****pit perspective. Each shíp has at least one (many have several) ****pit location defined on their hull somewhere. Playing from inside that ****pit still gives you the impression of being located at that position.

What we do NOT have anymore is a 3D ****pit overlay. In X2 you basically had two views layered on top of one another. One was a camera looking right out of the real geometry of your ship. In that camera you see your own ships hull minus the center part oft the ship (for example the wings of your ship) and in the second layer you see a 3D geometry of panels and instruments which mostly don't suit any purpose.

Now the porblem with that second layer was always that it didnt really fit into the ships geometry, because we had more than 70 ships but only 5 or so different ****pits (and really only two good looking ones). The inner structure of ****pits could never really fit into all the different ships we had.

So we had to make a decission:
- Option 1: Spend an awful lot of time making specialised inner geometry for each of the ships in the game? That would definitely have meant a lot fewer ships
- Option 2: Do it like X2 and sacrifice the realism of having a truly matching geometry in every ship. That would have meant ugly combinations.

So we decided for Option 3: Make ships a lot more detailed than ever before and put the outer camera SO CLOSE on the hull that you get the feeling of actually being inside the ship too.

One of the people in this thread pointed out that what he will miss is the cozy feeling of having the wings of his ship next to him! Well that's exactly what you will NOT be misisng. The wings will be there and they will look a lot more detailed then ever before. The ****pit position now is truly matching the ship and in many cases shows you many elements of the ship around you (granted however there are also ships where the ****pit is very exposed to the front so even when turning around you dont see the geometry of the ship itself. These ships don't have a cozy feeling but a better view Wink

We truly believe that this combined with the fact that you now have a whole new HUD system full of really functional overlays and not just a lot of blinking lights basically giving no info at all, IS the best choice for the game.

Let me give you some screenshots to demonstrate how you can still sit inside a ****pit and look around:

Split Superfreighter:

Hope this cleared up what we really did.

Cheers and have a lot of fun playing X3!

I played and enjoyed X2, will be getting X3 hopefully this week in mail. seen these screens on X3 forums, they looked awesome. Just one of those games that keeps you playing for a long time with its open style of gameplay, one of the few and rare pc games that do so nowdays. Respawn has a nice review of it for those interested.

Remember when we could only get those kinds of images from pre-rendered cutscenes in games. Now we are playing in those kind of graphics.
