Hi,

try using a more tested compiler like 3.4

gcc4 produces slower code for amd64, so you'll loose nothing.
Oh, and did you load the xv module in your xorg.conf?

Fedora Core 4 uses gcc-4.0, so I'm not certain that this problem is due to the gcc version.

Does X crash immediately after fvwm2, or is it at some time afterwards?

Please generate and post an nvidia-bug-report.log. Also, does this problem go away if you switch to the 'nv' X driver?

Thanks,
Lonni

hello again!

i played around a little and i'm sad to say that i can crash my system reproducably with both the nv and nvidia driver in my Xorg (the nvidia kernel module is loaded in both cases, though).

attached you will find the two last crashes.

here is how i reproduce it: use xawtv to watch tv in fullscreen/grabdisplay mode and use the mouse wheel to zap between channels really quick. just turn the wheel. the oops happens either immediatly or when returned to windowed mode or even when terminating xawtv.

i'm afraid this may not really related to the nvidia driver directly. perhaps some kernel structures get mixed up by any of the drivers (bttv, soundcards, usb, whatever). i'm not sure how to proceed now. i can recompile kernel and driver with gcc3, wait for the next kernel and/or driver, perhaps even report the crashes (but where to?), i dunno.

any advice is greatly appreciated...
Raimund

ps: otoh, i'm really happy that i can eventually play a 3d shooter on my main OS. no need to reboot into the toy OS. so, keep up the good work

You could be hitting a kernel bug. Have you tried using an official Debian kernel?

No, i didnt try that with an official debian kernel, yet. But i guess that wouldnt change much if i really found a bug. I still dunno how to proceed but at least someone knows about this

Please test with an official Debian kernel. That would help to determine whether this is a problem with the kernel you're using or something else altogether.

Thanks,
Lonni

@nvRaimi: since you say you can reliably reproduce the problem with the nv driver, you should report these problems to the LKML; there's nothing in crash-nvidia.txt to suggest NVIDIA Linux graphics driver involvement.

just in case anyone cares: i recompiled everything with gcc-3.3.6 and the crash remains. when it persists with 2.6.14 i'll report it to LKML.

Time flies by. In the meantime i re-installed Debian (sid) and upgraded to 2.6.14.2. I didnt reproduce the bttv-crash, yet. good. now i have different problems which i will discuss in a new thread when i investigated a little further.
