Unhappy direct rendering: No [solved]

Hi all,
I have:
AMD Athlon XP 2100+
nVidia GeForce 4 Ti4200
512M RAM
Mandrake 10.1

I have installed the latest nVidia drivers, and it went OK.
I can play Quake3 Arena, TuxRacer, glxgears and the sort without any problems.
But I discovered I can't run Doom3.
While looking over stuff I discovered I don't have direct rendering
I DO see the nvidia-splash when my display manager starts, and I do have 3D accelerated graphics.

here's my glxinfo output:
Code:

[edit] By the way, I used to have NO problems running Doom3 when I used Mandrake 10.0, which used XFree86 in stead of X.org [/edit]

Your problem isn't DRI. You shouldn't be using that with nvidia kernel module. It's only for older cards with open specs.

So you say It's okay that it says I don't have direct rendering?
But that means I've been searching me head off for nothing?
I thought that must have been my problem, since my son who is using an ATI Radeon has no problems running Doom3 under mandrake 10.1
And his glxinfo said he has direct rendering.
So the dri part from the xorg.conf is just for that? And you shouldn't use that with nvidia.
But still, my glxinfo is linked against none of the nvidia-files. Not even after running ldconfig...
And Doom3 still ain't working :-(

It looks like your client side libraries are mesa rather than nvidia. Try rerunning the installer. You might want to uninstall the mesa libraries first if you can.

DRI works with ATI radeons up to 9250.

I can't remove the MESA packages, because it will want to remove half of me system for them to be removed.
But how can I get the stuff to be linked to the nvidia libraries in stead of the mesa ones?
Reinstalling didn't solve it :-(

Well, I solved it. I DO need direct rendering. The complete guide to what I did can be found here:

I currently use this little more newer and cleaner version of the script:
Check that MESA and NVIDIA variables are what you want.
Manually copy or hard link the relevant so-files to MESA_OR_NVIDIA_DIR
/usr/local/lib/Mesa_or_nVidia/

$ ls -l /usr/local/lib/Mesa_or_nVidia/
total 896

i tried it, but:

$ sudo sh nvidia-use enable

Well, I'm having similar issues on a Sun Java W2100z workstation, dual AMD64 Opteron machine. The settings all seem to be OK but I still can't get the output from glxinfo to come out right. Here are the results from glxinfo:

Under /usr/lib and /usr/lib64, libGL.so and libGL.so.1 point to libGL.so.1.0.7676. There are no links to libGL.so.1 under /usr/X11R6/lib or /usr/X11R6/lib64. I'm running RHEL3.

I'm basically trying to figure out why the graphics performance of this machine is not as I would have expected. It seems too slow on the 2D and 3D graphics. As you notice from the XF86Config settings above, I've been trying to turn on/off options in an attempt to figure out a combination that works. Still haven't converged on the right one. I'm not sure what all those options really do, if anything, but it seems that many people have had performance issues with the NVIDIA driver in linux. I've personally had a lot of crashes during logout which seem to have been fixed by one of the patches I downloaded today. Now I'm just trying to find a way of improving the 2D/3D performance. Suggestions are greatly welcomed

Here's your problem:
####
direct rendering: No
server glx vendor string: SGI
####

You're not using the nvidia driver's glx. Your nvidia driver installation is broken or incomplete.

Does this problem reproduce if you reinstall the official 1.0-7676 package? Have you installed some other vendor's OpenGL (ATI, SGI, etc)?
