help a linux newbie, XF86Config file

hi i just installed rh 8.0 and the linux 4191 drivers:

i ignored the errors edited XF86Config and rebooted.. then :

i dont know about text editing in linux so if anyone could help me out i would really appreciate it

Were you using a Linux text editor to do the editing? Copying files back and forth from a Windows partition, and using a Windows editor, can cause this type of thing. I trust vim, personally, so if you want to go with that, just vim the file, hit the 'i' key to get into insert mode (your arrow keys, delete, and whatever else should still work), get rid of any control characters (^M, especially), then hit Esc to exit out of insert mode, and type in :wq and hit enter to save and exit.

If you don't see any control characters, then that's probably not your problem, though...

hi, thanks for the fast reply, i now seem to get the hang of vim a bit, however i tried editing the file but xfree keeps telling me that the file cant be parsed,and i didnt find anything odd neither special chars on it...

ok, thanks for the help, if anyone has some more info plz share it with me, im going crazy over this...

will try moving around some lines in a new config file tho.. but dont know what really is causing the problem, check the file up there seems ok.. isnt it??.....

oh well thnks in adv. everyone

btw- yeap i copyed from a windows partition.. maybe doing the whole file again by hand would solve it...

"failed to initialize kernel module"

Was the kernel module loaded when you did a startx?

If so, then check dmesg (or /var/log/messages or similar) for why the kernel module wouldn't initialize itself.

If not, load it (with an "/sbin/modprobe nvidia") and try again.

ok just did that, cjhecked dmsg and i saw that the module wasnt allocating a irq for the vidcard, had to turn off pnp aware os and turn on allocate irq pci to vga in the bios

all is good now

Just wanted to send a thanks for this thread, I know I'm probably upsetting people by posting, but just wanted to say thanks, I would of never thought to check my BIOS settings otherwise.

Glad to read you found a solution. Since you wrote in your first post that you didn't know much about text editing under linux, just wanted to throw out a simple trick. A response had mentioned the problems of copying text files between Linux and Windows machines. Rather than editing out the carriage return code (^M) of dos files with vi(m), try:

1. Verify it is a real dos-mode file. At a command prompt, run the 'file' command followed by the name of the questionable doc (i.e. file [somefile]). A unix text file (line-feed only) will result in "somefile: ASCII text" whereas a dos text file (line-feed & carriage return) will report "somefile: ASCII English text, with CRLF line terminators".

2. Then to strip or add the carriage returns - since you use RH8 - just use the commands "unix2dos [somefile]" or "dos2unix [somefile]".
