Default 1.0.-8174 - booting to black screen

When my system enters runlevel 5 it gets black screen. Not all the way black, but kinda bright black. Then after 1 minute or so it goes really black, and shuts monitor off and at time system starts responding again and I can ssh to it to KILL X (which takes 100% CPU). When X dies KDM login screen shows up and it is all OK until I logout again or restart.

Any help is appreciated.

I have a few questions:
0) Did this work properly with 1.0-7676?
1) This looks like a Dell system. Do you have the most recent BIOS applied?
2) Does booting with the noapic and/or acpi=off kernel parameters have any impact on this problem?

Thanks,
Lonni

Thank you for the response.
0) well I have 7676 loaded now. Sometimes it locks after logout, but it always works on the new boot.
1) yes it is Dell with A12 bios revision
2)acpi=off seemed like it did have an impact. With that option screen would never got out of "bright black" mode and I could not access system with ssh.

Just small rant: there are 3 things that bug me with old nvidia driver:
1) lockups on restarting X
7676 is usable here. Specially now when the winter is here and almost every storm will restart all computers. 7676 will at least initially start X after every reboot so for now it is much better then new driver.

2) artifacts on screen when using composite extension
i know that i have crappy card and that this will never work with it, so no big deal.

3) I cannot play tuxracer at all and with ppracer I can sometimes do one race before screen starts locking up for a minute at a time.

I'll see if I can locate one of them to reproduce this problem.

Thanks,
Lonni

Actually, another thing to try is different values for NvAGP in your X configuration. Please let me know if the results differ.

Thanks,
Lonni

NvAGP was the first thing I tried before. With old driver i had it at 1. That did not work with 8xxx so I changed it to 3. It is using AGPGART now.

Btw, I can give you temporary access to this system, if you want to take a look around.

Sure, if you want to give me ssh access, that can't hurt. Please email linux-bugs@nvidia.com referencing the URL of this thread, with the access information.

Thanks,
Lonni
