Default X display problems

I run Mandrake 9.0, XFree86 4.2.1, GeForce4 MX 420 with driver ver 1.0.4191, GDM from Gnome 2.0.

GMD comes up correclty after a reboot, but after several login/logout sessions it stops displaying correctly. Upon logging out, the login screen gets corrupted (but the mouse looks ok and moves). I have to switch terminals (ctrl+alt+fx, ctrl+atl+f7) to get the display fixed. After a few more login/logout sessions, X stops letting me switch terminals and I am forced to reboot.

Has anyone else seen this? Does anyone have any ideas where I can look to figure what the problem is? Thanks a lot.

Michael

Didn't you just post this not five hours ago?

Yeah, I thought so.

If I had a clue what it was, I'd have said something in that thread. Most of the people helping on this board don't check every three hours, either, so it is very likely that they haven't gotten a chance to see the other thread at all yet.

And even if so, there's no guarantee that the problem even has a solution. We can't see the driver source, so we can't tell why it might be doing that.

Hi,

have had a similar problem. I don't know the nature of the problem but a solution (at least for me). Since I have used KDM with NVIDIA driver 2990 and the problem occured every time I logged out. I've removed KDM - that meens I start X by hand. As a result I have a stable X and shorter startup times as well as more free memory. :-)

Bye

Default framebuffer

i had the same probleme a year ago
it seems it was the framebuffer who made the systems crash when switch from x to terminal
(so when halting the system or with alt+f*)
try to rebuild your kernel withour the framebuffer support
hope it helps

bwkaz: I didn't realize the message got posted twice. Sorry. No need to get all preachy about it.

Everyone else: Thanks for the advice.

Anyone know if Nvidia accepts bug submissions?

If it was accidental, that's fine.

I had just come from JustLinux.com where someone was doing the same thing, but on purpose; that may explain some of my comments. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

linux-bugs@nvidia.com is (or was, last I knew...) the email address for bugreports on the Linux drivers.
